A Message from the Rev. Anne Benefield

Dear Friend, When I was a little girl, I used to sit in church day-dreaming. I liked watching the illuminated specks of dust gently flow through the streaks of light coming from the opened windows. I liked the music and the prayers, but most of all I liked the silence .In the stillness of the sanctuary, I folded my hands together and prayed. Like most children, I didn't really pray words, I prayed silence. If I managed to sit perfectly still, I could feel a gentle movement in my crisscrossed fingers. I believed I was feeling the Holy Spirit in me. As a young adult, I told this story in a class on Christian spirituality. The minister smiled, indulgently, and said, "Didn't anyone ever explain circulation to you?" I was embarrassed. A year or two later, I received a call to ministry while praying. I went to seminary at Princeton Theological Seminary. In the survey course on the Old Testament, I was delighted to discover that the Hebrew people felt that the Spirit dwelled in the blood circulating in every living being. Sometimes you have to be very sophisticated to come back to the wisdom of a child. As the minister of the Geneva Presbyterian Church, I find the Lord keeps my hands busy. I spend a pretty good amount of time with my hands folded in prayer for church members, friends, and strangers, too. In my prayers, I ask that the Lord would lead me to those who need to experience God's love through the presence and ministries of the Geneva Presbyterian Church. We are called to use our hands for prayer and to reach out to extend the love of God in our community, nation, and world. I pray that you will come join us. We are a warm and spirited family of believers who are diverse and inclusive. Since we are in the midst of revisioning our future, now is the perfect time to come.
